All my life I split my interests between writing, music, and art. When I was young, I
thought I’d become a famous pianist. I took lessons and loved playing for hours
everyday. My mother drew portraits in charcoal, and as a teenager, I asked her to
show me how she made her portraits look like the subject. She explained the
process to me and during classes I drew faces.

I knew then that I loved portraiture. I loved depicting the emotion I found in the
eyes of my subjects. I loved the lighting on the hair, or the texture of the skin. I
found tricks to make the drawing look so real, using matches shaved down to a
sharp point for fine detail work, and erasers to create wispy hairs. Like the piano, I
would draw for hours and not notice the time.

I fell in love with oils the first moment I used them. I loved the feel, and smell, and
the way the paint spreads on the canvas. At first, I muddled the colors into a gray
mixture, completely washed out. I studied everything I could find, and experimented
until I learned what I was doing wrong. Colors opened up the universe for me.

I bought acrylics, watercolors, and colored pencils and inks, anything that gave me
the tools to create in color. After many years of color immersion, I went back to
charcoal, and charcoal portraiture. The depth and sharpness I could achieve with
charcoal still held power over me.

I love landscapes because I love the outdoors. I find God in every little detail of
nature and I am in awe. I love portraits because I see a story behind each person I
paint. I love people. But then I love fantasy; I love to paint what I can imagine, and I
love to write what I can imagine, even though it’s not real, it is in my mind. How
could I settle for only one of the categories and leave the others behind?

I am active in the community, supporting my local art club. I have entered shows,
and won awards. What a thrill to know that others appreciate your art. I have a
wonderful husband that supports my endeavors and helps me drag my art around
the country. Gotta love him for that alone! We have a dog and four cats (all feral at
one time, needing a soft heart and a warm bed.)

My life is filled with love, washed in shades of gray, adrift in a sea of vivid color.
